  1. Close QuickBooks Desktop on your server computer (the one that hosts your company file). Go to the File menu and click the Quit QuickBooks Desktop option.
  2. Open the Windows Start menu.
  3. Insert the keyword “File Explorer” into the search box and open ‘File Explorer’.
  4. Select My Computer from the navigation bar. This is sometimes called “This PC.”
  5. Select and open your C: drive.
  6. Right-click on the screen, select New, and then Folder to create a new file folder. Now, designate the folder with an approachable name, like “QB Test Folder.”
  7. Follow the steps to create a backup company file. When QuickBooks prompts you to choose a location for the backup, save it to the C: drive folder you just made.
  8. Follow the steps to restore your company file using the new backup.

Start using your backup as your primary company file after you no longer have QB Error 6000. Do not put the previous company file to use. To prevent it from accidental use, we advise you to rename it.

Go to the section for your server setup and follow the instructions if you still see Error -6000, -83.

Try the steps below if you get QuickBooks Desktop Error 6000 when restoring a company file.

Solution 1: Check your backup filename

Verify that neither the filename nor the folder containing your company file backup includes any spaces, symbols, or other non-alphanumeric characters.

  1. Open the Windows Start menu and type “File Explorer” into the search box. Now, open File Explorer.
  2. Locate and open the folder containing your company file backup.
  3. In this step, you must rename the file that ends in .qbb, so right-click it and choose the option ‘Rename.’ To restore your company file, use this QBB file, which serves as a backup company file.
  4. The filename must be free of any spaces, symbols, or other non-alphanumeric characters.
  5. Simply rename the QBB file’s location by right-clicking on it. Avoid punctuation, spaces, or other deviations from the norm.
  6. Adhere to the steps to restore your company file.

If you still see QuickBooks Payroll Error 6000, move on to Solution 2.

Solution 2: Create a portable company file

If you cannot restore your QBB file, go back to and open the company file you created the backup from.

  1. Comply with the instructions to create a QBM, a portable company file.
  2. To restore your company file, use the portable company file.

If QuickBooks Error 6000 is still unresolved, move on to Solution 3.

Solution 3: Use your local hard disc to restore your backup file.

You should copy the company backup file from the server to a local hard disc. Typically, this is the C: drive. If you want your company file back, just follow the instructions and adhere to it. When you have fixed the problem, you may upload the company file again.

If your company file is on a Windows server, follow these instructions.

Solution 1: Disable hosting from your server computer

Make sure Host Multi-User Access is off on your workstations if you are hosting your corporate data across a network. These are PCs that are linked to your network but do not store any data for your company files. Only your server computer should host.

  1. Launch QuickBooks on one of your PC.
  2. Do not access any company files. Choose Utilities from the File menu instead.
  3. Do not choose the “Host Multi-User Access” option if it appears. Go ahead with the other computer system.
  4. If Stop Hosting Multi-User Access is an option, select it and repeat these steps on all your computers.

In case the QB error 6000 persists, move on to Solution 2.

Solution 2: Use QuickBooks File Doctor

To use File Doctor to scan your corporate file, download the QuickBooks File Doctor and follow the instructions given below:

  • You may access Company File Issues directly from the tool hub.
  • Click on the QuickBooks File Doctor. The opening of the file doctor may take up to a minute.

Note: If the QuickBooks File Doctor will not launch, try opening the QuickBooks Desktop File Doc instead.

  • Choose your company file from the drop-down menu in the QuickBooks File Doctor. If the file you need is not shown, choose Browse and then Search for it.
  • Check your file (just the middle option) and press the Continue button to proceed.
  • Click “Next” after entering your QuickBooks administrator password.

Solution 3: Edit your Windows host file

If you still have issues, you can test your network to see if it is causing the error. Go to one of your workstations and follow the steps to edit your Windows host file.
