First, identify your disability and document it. Documentation should include information about the impact of your disability on your education and daily activities.

Although the process of identifying your disability will vary from school to school, the accommodations that you will receive are based upon your individual needs. Accommodations that are common include academic adjustments, assistive technology, extra time on exams, and more are all possible. You can also access auxiliary aids like note-takers and readers to help you study for exams.

There are many support organizations on campus that will give you an insider view of what it’s like for students with disabilities. You can also visit a local support center.

Most colleges have a Disability Services Office. They are responsible for arranging reasonable accommodations for students. Their mission is to make college more accessible for all students. They can help you create a plan that meets your educational needs.

When you’re ready to get started, contact your college’s Disability Services office. Their contact information can be found in the admissions office, or online.

Once you have identified and documented your disability, you will need to set up an intake appointment with an advisor. Your advisor can assist you with everything, from getting financial assistance to fighting harassment.

Your disability documentation is secure. The Disabled Services Office stores and maintains your information. The advisor will be happy to provide advice and information about how to protect yourself and other resources at the college.

Talking to a former student or current student is another way to find out more about the disability services that are available to you. You can talk to other students in similar situations during college visits or online information sessions. Alternatively, you can request to meet with alumni.

Academic researchers

Academia globally is underrepresented in academic researchers with disabilities. This is alarming for both researchers and the general public. As a result, academic institutions must take a more active role in recruiting disabled people and demonstrating their inclusion in the academic workforce. Universities must also foster an intellectual encouragement culture and recognize the value of disabled people’s contributions.

It is important to include people with disabilities in research, but it is equally important to involve them in the design of research methods. For example, disabled co-researchers should be given opportunities to contribute to the conceptualization of the research questions, as well as the design and analysis of data collection procedures. They should have the ability to make informed choices about how they participate in the research process. They should be encouraged to take on advisory roles.

To better understand how to make the most of co-produced research, I conducted a study with six peer researchers (PRs) with learning disabilities. Each of these individuals had a different experience with participating in research. They collaborated with a larger research group to create an easy-to-read, comprehensive report. It included a 10-point Action Plan which was designed for policymakers as well as learning disability support organizations and individuals who have learning disabilities.

The research team comprised academics and peer researchers. Two PRs and one academic conducted Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) and all interview sessions were transcribed. The draft findings were reviewed by an Advisory Group.

A key focus was the need for additional funding, time, and resources to ensure that individuals with learning disabilities were able to engage in the research process. Peer researchers emphasized the importance of collaboration and shared firsthand accounts.

The project “Getting Our Voices Heard” explored the possibility of ensuring that individuals with learning disabilities could be heard in research and academia. The research team identifies the research question, develops a brief, then works with a variety of stakeholders to secure funding.

The study found that PRs faced significant challenges at each stage of the project. These included the inability to play a role when designing and developing an online survey as well as desk-based analysis of relevant policy.

The National Association for Law Placement recently conducted a survey on law firms and found that only 0.4% of their partners and associates have disabilities. Many of these lawyers are reluctant about disclosing their disability support workers in Melbourne for fear that the employer will view them as less competent.

Numerous law firms have made reasonable accommodations for disabled lawyers. Some do so for free or at a minimal cost.

A number of these firms also offer assistive technologies, such as computers and amplification systems, to attorneys. These simple improvements are not considered by other firms.
